If you have been researching PEMF therapy in Adelaide, you may have noticed that there are many different types of devices available.
Some use coils embedded within mats or applicators. Others use different delivery systems, frequencies and combinations of technologies.
At Purposeful Life, I use the P90 and P90 Plus, which combine pulsed electromagnetic field technology with additional frequency based wellness technologies.
So what is the difference, and why does the type of device matter?
What Is PEMF Therapy?
PEMF stands for Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy.
PEMF devices generate electromagnetic fields that pulse at particular frequencies and intensities.
Importantly, PEMF is not one single treatment protocol.
Different devices can use different frequencies, intensities, waveforms, applicators and treatment times. Therefore, research conducted using one PEMF device cannot automatically be assumed to apply to every PEMF product.
This distinction is important when comparing different systems.
What Does the Research Say About PEMF?
PEMF has been studied for decades.
There is established medical use of certain electromagnetic stimulation devices for specific applications, particularly bone healing.
Researchers have also investigated PEMF for musculoskeletal pain and physical function.
For example, systematic reviews have reported potential benefits for pain and function in some people with chronic low back pain and osteoarthritis. However, studies use very different treatment protocols and the results are not consistent across every condition.
More recent reviews continue to describe PEMF as promising for some musculoskeletal conditions while emphasising the need for larger and more standardised clinical trials.
Therefore, I do not believe PEMF should be presented as a treatment that produces the same result for everyone.
What About PEMF Mats?
Many whole body PEMF systems use electromagnetic coils positioned within a mat.
The person lies on the mat while the device generates pulsed electromagnetic fields.
These systems vary considerably in frequency, intensity and design.
There is some research into whole body PEMF devices. However, evidence for broad wellness and therapeutic claims remains limited, particularly when claims extend across many unrelated health conditions.
This is why comparing two devices simply because both say PEMF on the label can be misleading.
The specifications and method of delivery matter.
How Are the P90 and P90 Plus Different?
The P90 and P90 Plus are the frequency wellness devices I use at Purposeful Life.
Rather than being a traditional mat that you lie on, they use a foot based delivery system.
The devices combine PEMF with terahertz related technology according to the manufacturer’s design.
This creates a very different experience from lying on a whole body PEMF mat.
However, an important distinction needs to be made.
Research supporting PEMF generally does not automatically prove the effectiveness of the P90 or P90 Plus specifically.
Likewise, research into terahertz radiation or its biological interactions does not automatically demonstrate that a consumer wellness device will produce a particular health outcome.
That is why I prefer to explain what the technology is rather than promise what it will do for you.
What Is Terahertz Technology?
Terahertz frequencies occupy part of the electromagnetic spectrum between microwave and infrared radiation.
Terahertz technology is an active area of scientific research. Researchers are investigating its potential applications in areas including imaging, sensing, materials science and biological research.
There is also scientific interest in how terahertz radiation interacts with biological tissues.
However, that research should not be interpreted as evidence that terahertz wellness devices can detoxify the body, clear energy pathways, correct cellular dysfunction or treat disease.
Those are much stronger claims than the current clinical evidence supports.
What Does the P90 Plus Include?
This is where the P90 Plus differs further from the standard P90.
The P90 Plus is a system consisting of the main footplate device and two additional handheld devices.
Main P90 Plus Device
The main device uses:
PEMF technology
Terahertz technology
It also offers 20 intensity levels, an upgraded footplate and infrared remote control.
Frost Age Beauty Device
The Frost Age Beauty Device uses:
Radio Frequency
EMS
This is a separate handheld component of the P90 Plus system.
Revitaluxe Massager
The Revitaluxe Massager includes:
3 in 1 magnetic technology
This combines pulsed electromagnetic, static magnetic and rotating magnetic fields.
It also includes:
EMS
TENS
Red light
So importantly, TENS is a function of the Revitaluxe Massager. It is not a function of the main P90 Plus footplate.
What Does a Session Feel Like?
This is often what people actually want to know.
You remain seated during the session and place your feet onto the device.
The intensity can be adjusted according to your comfort.
People’s experiences vary.
Some people describe feeling relaxed during or after a session. Others may notice sensations associated with the device while it is operating.
I do not promise that you will experience a particular result.
Instead, you can experience the technology for yourself and decide how you feel about it.
