What is Breathwork?

As a breathwork instructor Adelaide and Barossa Valley clients rely on, Marg brings a grounded, science-backed approach to every session.

Breathwork is an ancient practice that has evolved alongside human development and potential for thousands of years. The history of breathwork spans many epochs, disciplines and cultures.

Breathing practices are central to ancient traditions including Yoga, Tantra, and Shamanism. Throughout recorded history, conscious breathing has been considered a major factor in physical health and emotional stability.

In fact, our breath is the most available and effective tool for improving our health and wellbeing, and we have it with us all of the time. As a result, we can all learn to breathe better.

During a Breathwork session, Marg uses touch purely to help you integrate the change process more fully. Touch helps you remain resourceful in managing activation levels. Marg has consent protocols in place including written consent, verbal consent, and a consent card given at each session. Touch will ONLY be used with your consent.

Safety is of the upmost importance – Breathwork will bring up certain contraindications that will stop you from being able to attend.

However, breathwork is not suitable for everyone. Specifically, avoid if you are pregnant, have high blood pressure, severe PTSD, severe mental health conditions such as bipolar, schizophrenia or psychosis, or are currently taking medication that alters brain chemistry. Additionally, do not attend if you have a detached retina, recent physical injuries, fractures or surgeries, epilepsy, history of aneurysm, cardiovascular problems, history of seizures, severe asthma, heart disease, or diabetes. Furthermore, avoid if you have been hospitalised for any psychiatric condition, emotional crisis, or spiritual emergence within the past three years. Therefore, always consult your doctor before attending if you have any concerns.

The Science

More than four decades of scientific research, including two new studies published in Nature and Brain Sciences, support breathwork as a powerful modality with enormous potential.

Furthermore, the range of benefits for both physical and mental health are vast, ranging from improving memory and cognitive function, to activating the peripheral nervous system, lowering blood pressure, improving respiratory function, and relieving symptoms of depression.

Additionally, studies show breathwork improves sleep, relieves menopausal symptoms, reduces chronic pain and PTSD, and supports better post-surgery recovery. Moreover, intentional deep breathing enhances cognitive and athletic performance, creativity, and overall wellbeing.

It’s been scientifically proven that Breathwork:

Breathwork has been scientifically proven to reduce stress and anxiety and improve respiratory function. Additionally, it boosts the immune system, enhances athletic performance, and improves sleep quality. Furthermore, it increases mindfulness and self-awareness and supports better cardiovascular health
