What Is Actually Going On?
You snap at your kids over something small and then feel terrible about it.
You’re lying awake at 2am with your mind running through lists.
During a difficult conversation, you suddenly go quiet or feel completely disconnected.
You’re exhausted, but your body doesn’t seem to know how to switch off.
If any of this sounds familiar, you may have heard the term nervous system dysregulation.
It isn’t a diagnosis in itself, and these experiences can have many different causes. But understanding how your nervous system responds to prolonged or repeated stress can help make sense of why you sometimes feel as though your body is reacting before you’ve had time to think.
This is something I regularly discuss with clients at Purposeful Life in Glen Osmond, Adelaide and Williamstown in the Barossa Valley.
How the Autonomic Nervous System Works
Your autonomic nervous system works largely in the background, helping regulate functions including heart rate, blood pressure, digestion and other automatic bodily processes.
Two of its major branches are the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
The sympathetic nervous system helps mobilise the body when action is required. During a stress response, this can include changes in heart rate, blood pressure and alertness.
The parasympathetic nervous system plays an important role in functions associated with conserving energy, digestion and returning the body toward its usual state after a stress response.
We often hear these described simply as “fight or flight” and “rest and digest.”
That’s useful as a starting point, but our nervous system is more complex than an on/off switch. Different branches can interact, and responses such as freezing can involve both sympathetic and parasympathetic activity.
What Happens With Ongoing Stress?
Your stress response is designed to help you adapt to challenges.
A short-term stress response can be completely normal and useful.
Problems can arise when stress becomes prolonged, repeated or difficult to recover from. Research shows that chronic stress can affect the brain and physiological systems involved in stress regulation and adaptation.
Rather than thinking of the nervous system as simply “stuck,” I prefer to think about whether the body is having difficulty moving flexibly between activation and recovery.
Someone may feel constantly alert and unable to settle.
Another person may feel flat, disconnected or withdrawn, and some people describe moving between the two.
Why Can This Happen?
There isn’t one single cause.
Our stress responses are influenced by many factors, including our environment, previous experiences, physical health, sleep, ongoing stress, pain and psychological wellbeing.
Repeated stress can lead to adaptations in the brain and body systems involved in responding to future stressors.
That doesn’t mean your nervous system has permanently forgotten how to function.
It means the body can adapt to what it repeatedly experiences, and importantly, adaptation can change.
What Can Nervous System Dysregulation Feel Like?
People use the term nervous system dysregulation to describe experiences such as:
- Feeling constantly on edge or unable to relax
- Becoming overwhelmed more easily than you used to
- Feeling exhausted but unable to switch off
- Muscle tension, particularly through the jaw, neck or shoulders
- Difficulty settling after stressful situations
- Sleep that doesn’t feel restorative
- Feeling emotionally reactive
- Going quiet or feeling disconnected during difficult situations
- Feeling as though your body reacts before your mind catches up
These experiences are not specific to nervous system dysregulation and can have many physical or psychological causes.
If symptoms are persistent, severe, new or concerning, they deserve appropriate assessment by a qualified healthcare professional.
Can the Nervous System Change?
Yes – the nervous system isn’t static.
The brain and nervous system have the capacity to adapt in response to experience, a characteristic broadly described as neuroplasticity. Research into chronic stress demonstrates both adaptive and maladaptive changes in the neural systems involved in stress responses.
That is one reason I don’t look at someone who has been under stress for years and think:
“This is simply who you are.”
I’m much more interested in asking:
What has your body been adapting to, and what might help support a different pattern?
Looking at the Whole Person
At Purposeful Life, I don’t assume every symptom has one cause or that one modality is the answer for everyone.
I look at the broader picture, including nervous-system well being, metabolic health, lifestyle, stress, thought patterns and the experiences that may be influencing how you feel.
Depending on what you’re experiencing, my work may include:
Spinal Flow Technique™
A gentle, light-touch well being approach focused around the spine and nervous system. There is no cracking, manipulation or force.
PEMF & Terahertz
Complementary wellness modalities that form part of my cellular-health approach.
NLP Coaching
Exploring thought patterns, beliefs and behaviours that may be contributing to stress or keeping you stuck.
Breathwork
Practical breathing techniques that can support relaxation and self-regulation.
Metabolic Health Education
Exploring lifestyle, nutrition, insulin resistance and other factors that may be relevant to your broader metabolic wellbeing.
The aim isn’t to use everything.
It’s to understand what you’re experiencing first and then consider an appropriate place to begin.
