The way we live and the things we do are made up of a collection of small things, actions and behaviours that we do repeatedly every single day.

Collectively, our habits have the power to define the quality of our lives.
Changing the way we do just one small thing can have an overarching impact on everything around us – and we have the power to affect any level of change that we want to in any aspect of our lives.

So why don’t we?

Why are we all not thriving, feeling accomplished, proud of ourselves and living our best lives?

Because changing our small, seemingly insignificant ways of doing things is so hard, for many people it becomes impossible.

Habits and our mindset

So if we know all of this stuff already, why is it so hard?

Our habits form part of our inner self-reflective framework. This means that the things we do also define how we see ourselves.

If we see ourselves as lazy, incapable, or incompetent, it is likely that our habits are part of the catalyst driving that mindset, and also reinforcing it.

When our habits join forces with our mindset, trying to break the cycle between the two can feel totally overwhelming.

But it is absolutely possible for anyone to do it.

Setting goals

Lots of people have big life goals and changes they want to achieve.

Losing weight is big on the wish list and success stories are things of inspiration. But it is not the final destination that makes the biggest difference, it is the small changes that are made every day along the way.

The old habits that are discarded and new ones introduced have a lasting, life-changing impact. Weight loss is just the byproduct of a new set of habits and a new way of living.

Doing things like making healthy food, getting up and going to the gym when we don’t feel like it changes the way we feel about and view ourselves. This drives us to stick with new ways of doing things and blossom into new habits that are here to stay.

Healthy habits

Healthy habits equal a healthy mindset.

If there are things you want to change in your life, it helps to break down the changes you need to make into small, easy-to-achieve steps.

If you try to conquer it all at once, you will quickly feel demoralised, making it easy to give up and go back to doing things the way you used to.

Want to eat healthier? Start by committing to change just one meal a day into a healthy one.

When that becomes easier, add a second meal and so forth. Eventually, it will just become a habit to choose healthy food options without even thinking about it.

Making lasting changes

When making a change, the first few weeks are tough. It can bring up a lot of intense emotions, making you feel overwhelmed and frustrated. This is completely normal and par for the course. Allow the heightened emotions to pass through and keep your eye on the goals that you set for yourself. This will pass!

Some of our habits are self-soothing, so suddenly taking them away or trying to reduce your automatic reach for them takes focus, discipline and sheer determination.

You can do it. There is absolutely no question that you can, but sometimes you may need a helping hand.

Ask for help

A lot of our habits and the things we do come from a deep-seated place, rooted in heavy emotions and life experiences.

Habits, wellness and mindset are all interconnected.

Things like smoking, heavy drinking, overeating, and overspending all have a massive impact on our wellness and our mindsets. But changing them without the support and guidance of a trained practitioner can be the difference between success and failure.

There is no shame in asking for help from a personal trainer when we want to achieve our fitness goals, so don’t let there be any shame when asking for help from a practitioner that can help you achieve your lifestyle and mental health goals.
